The homeowners in this Voorhees, NJ kitchen remodel wanted to replace their small, outdated kitchen with an open-concept space and a big island. Getting there meant structural work: taking out walls, adding new beams and moving the main pipe.
The hardest part of this kitchen remodel was structural: making the rooms bigger. We took out walls and put in new beams. Removing the wall behind the old cabinets brought two existing windows into the kitchen area, making it noticeably brighter. A new wall now separates the kitchen from the dining room.
The main pipe ran through the middle of the space, so Mariusz worked with a licensed plumber to move it and the other lines to the side. We then added a new ceiling with recessed spotlights and lamps, and rebuilt the floor from the bottom up with a new subfloor, underlayment and self-leveling compound. Mariusz recommended wood-look tile to match the hardwood in the dining room.
Mariusz and the homeowners worked out the design together. The finished kitchen centers on the big island they wanted, with a waterfall edge, seating and double pendant lights. Warm wood cabinets and a range hood custom-built on site complete the room.
Today it is a spacious place to cook, invite more people over and spend time together. The project took a few months from start to finish.
